Alton Raible is an American painter and illustrator who exhibited his art from around 1950 to 1980. He illustrated several of Zilpha Keatley Snyder's books.
Alton Raible was born in 1918. During the 1970s, he illustrated many children's and young adult books, including the books of Zilpha Keatley Snyder, Anne M. Green, Patricia M. Martin and Betty McKelvey Kalish. In 1972, he was nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Award for his illustration for Snyder's The Headless Cupid.
"When I entered art college at the age of twenty-five I'd never heard of Picasso, Cezanne, or Renoir, and knew nothing about art history. However, I already had skills, so I could put a lot of energy into catching up on the history and aesthetics of art. As a result of this background, I often tell my students that a cultured family is not a prerequisite to being an artist - it only means one may have to work harder."
