Point of View: April Hall

The story takes up where The Egypt Game has left off: on Christmas day, when April Hall and Melanie Ross plan to play an imaginative game involving Gypsies instead of their previous "Egypt Game". Soon, Melanie's brother Marshall joins them as well.

April explains about Gypsies, telling that they are nomadic people who travel in caravans, and sometimes they train bears to entertain people. Marshall is especially fascinated by the idea of training bears. They agree that they will go to the library later, to learn about Gypsies.

The chapter summarizes, to an extent, the events of The Egypt Game, so that readers unfamiliar with the previous book should know the premise. The girls recall their adventures in "Egypt" and talk about their friends.
