Point of View: April Hall

On the same evening, Melanie calls April on the phone and they are worried about Toby. April does not want to talk about him with her grandmother listening, so she heads for Melanie's apartment, claiming that she wants to borrow a book on Gypsies. Melanie suggests that they should tell the adults about Toby, while April suggests to keep their promise and remain silent.

The two friends argue when Melanie reveals that she is not really fond of the "Gypsy Game", mainly because the Gypsies were persecuted people. April gets angry, believing that Melanie does not like the game because it was April's idea. She goes home, reads the book until late, then cries herself to sleep.
