Twenty-four[]

Point of View: Toby Alvillar

Toby greets his friends as they enter the basement and is delighted to see them, chattering as if he were at someplace normal instead of a hideout in a dangerous part of the town. He tells about the hideout and about the people who usually shelter there.

When he asks how did the others find him, Marshall replies that it was Bear who led them to the church. Ken is angry, asking Toby what does he think he is doing, and that everyone is worried about him. April adds that Toby's father is anxious as well, and that he never planned to give up his right to his son, so Toby shouldn't have run away in the first place.

However, Toby reveals that his grandparents and their hit men threatened his father, so the best choice for him was to escape. He heard about the threats as he was hidden in a brontosaurus statue while the adults were talking.

Ken tries to convince Toby to go home, but he refuses and gets angry. The five children leave.
